What you get
Up to 30 hours of funded childcare a week for 38 weeks a year, or fewer hours spread over more weeks if your provider offers it. The hours cover childcare itself; providers can charge for extras like meals, nappies or trips.
Separately, every 3 and 4-year-old in England can get 15 hours a week regardless of income. Working families can add another 15 hours on top, making 30.
Who qualifies
- You live in England and your child is between 9 months old and school age.
- You and your partner (if you have one) each expect to earn at least the equivalent of 16 hours a week at the National Minimum or Living Wage over the next three months.
- Neither of you expects an adjusted net income over £100,000.
Deadlines that catch parents out
Funded hours start the term after your child becomes eligible and you've got a valid code. Apply early — ideally in the term before your child reaches the eligible age:
- Child eligible between 1 September and 31 December — apply by 31 August.
- Child eligible between 1 January and 31 March — apply by 31 December.
- Child eligible between 1 April and 31 August — apply by 31 March.
How to apply
- Apply through the Childcare Service on GOV.UK. It's free.
- You'll get an 11-digit code if you're eligible.
- Give the code to your nursery or childminder with your National Insurance number and your child's date of birth.
- Reconfirm every three months to keep the code valid.
Questions parents ask
Is 30 hours free childcare really free?
The childcare hours are funded, but providers may charge for consumables such as meals, nappies or activities. Ask your provider for a breakdown before you sign up.
Can I use 30 hours and Tax-Free Childcare together?
Yes. You can use Tax-Free Childcare to pay for extra hours or extras like meals that aren't covered by the funded hours.
I'm self-employed — can I get 30 hours?
Yes, if you expect to earn at least the minimum amount over the next three months. Newly self-employed parents get a 12-month start-up period where the minimum income rule doesn't apply.
You can apply for 30 hours free childcare yourself, for free.
